Money is learned by handling it: counting real coins, watching a balance grow, and writing down every dollar in and out. A trip to the bank and a month of honest records teach more than any worksheet.

What you need

  • Three jars labeled Save, Spend, Give
  • A small allowance or pay for extra jobs
  • A notebook ledger: date, in, out, what for, balance
  • A savings account in his name, if you choose

What done looks like

  • He can tell you in his own words what a bank does with a deposit.
  • A month of ledger entries that matches the cash in the jar.

What to do, grade by grade

  • Grade 2: visit a bank; watch a deposit; talk about where the money goes and what interest is.
  • Grade 2: store word problems drawn as one bar split into parts: the whole price, the part he has, the part still missing.
  • Grades 3-4: allowance split into the three jars every week.
  • Grade 5: one full month of every dollar in and out in the ledger, with a running balance.

How to teach it

  1. Explain the bank plainly: it keeps your money safe, lends some of it to other people, and pays you a little for letting it.
  2. Pay allowance in coins and bills he can split himself.
  3. Write in the ledger the same day money moves. Same day is the whole habit.
  4. At month's end, count the jar and compare it with the ledger balance. If they differ, find out why together.
  5. Let small spending mistakes happen. Talk about them after, without a lecture.
  6. Draw the bar before any math. The missing piece gets a question mark, and the picture shows whether to add or subtract.
